What utility can I use to verify proper operation of a new computer in the AHCI
mode? The drive is a Seagate SATA-II (300). What does AHCI do for the average
user who does not hot swap?

What do you mean by "proper operation"?

No need for vendor drivers. Generic AHCI drivers can drive
any AHCI hardware.
