AGP video card replacement won't work

I have an Abit KT7A mobo. I was using a Nivida 5600 video card. One
day it wouldn't boot. No video display. So I pulled out the 5600 and
put in an old TNT 2 card. It worked, so I ordered another 5600.

It came today and it doesn't work. I don't remember if the mobo is a
2x,4x or 8x, but I do know that I have never set any settings before
using the card.

The only reason I can think of why the new card (and old which had
been working fine for at least a year) won't work is because it is 8x.
I was always told that if the card fits it should work.

You can check here. According to this, it should work.
(Universal AGP 3.0 video card, in Universal AGP Motherboard ?)

With the TNT2 card in place, check the BIOS settings for AGP.
Then try shoving that 5600 back in.

you say the new card is an old one...........bought from where/who and did
the seller tell you it was working.
The card that went bad was a 5500. I bought a brand new 5500 from new
egg still in a shrink wrap box.

The TNT2 was just an extra card I had laying around. I have no reason
to think the new card is bad, except for the fact it is not working. I
suspect it has something to do with both cards being 8X AGP cards.

I don't know for sure though.

Hello, I have the same problem.

I had a GeForce FX5700 (AGP8x). It worked. Suddenly it stopped working.
When I turn on the PC, there is no display and the PC shuts down after 5
seconds.

I installed another videocard, GeForce 6600 (AGP8x), and had the same
problem.

Both these videocards work on other PCs.

Then, I installed a Riva TNT2 (AGP4x), and it worked like a charm.
After that, I tested a GeForce4 MX440 (AGP4x), and it also worked.

The conclusion is that AGP8x cards don't work *anymore*.
Why is that? Any opinions? Any help?

If you set the AGP rate in the BIOS to 4X, and then plug in the FX5700,
does that work ?

And if you run a benchmark like 3DMark2001SE, are any of the
cards that work, able to complete the benchmark without a problem ?
