I've recently up graded my old desktop running windows 98
to a laptop runnng windows xp home, I've installed Age of
Empires 2 but can't run it, the error is something to do
with my video card or directX. Has anyone had any
similar problems? I've also had the problem with some
other older games but AOE is one that I NEED to play
again, Cheers.

Lee,

Have you installed the AoE 2/Windows XP patch? If not, you can get it at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/aoeaok/Update/2.0a/W9XNT4/EN-US/Age2u
pA.exe.

If you have the patch, or the patch doesn't resolve your issue, your best
best would be to make sure you have all available updates from
windowsupdate.microsoft.com, then make sure you have the latest video and
audio drivers for your laptop.

If you don't know what video or audio chipset you have for your laptop, or
don't know where to find the latest drivers, post a copy of your DXDiag text
in a reply to this post and I'll see if I can direct you.

To reply with a dxdiag text:
Click on Start -> Run and type 'dxdiag' in the run box, then click 'Ok'.
When the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window appears you will see tabs across the
top click each tab and run the diagnostic tests on each. Then click the
'Save All Information' button, which will create a text file on your system
where you specify, as in My Documents or Desktop. Open that text file, copy
the contents and paste it to a reply.

Lee,
You want to make sure you have all the patches for AOE II. You'll want to
updated your video card with the latest drivers for it - they can often be
found at the manufacturer of or laptop website or the website of your video
card manufacturer.
Lastly, you'll want to make sure you have the latest version of DirectX
installed. You can get that here...
