Hi. I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm not very technical and want to play
Age of Empires 3 on 2 computers in our home. They're both are on Vista and
are connected to the same 4 port ADSL modem. I don't want to particularly go
through the internet, I just want to network between them to play against
each other off line. Is this possible and how do I do it? Do I need
something different to connect them or is it something I need to do/look for
in the settings before I try and play the game. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks. Also, one computer has War Chiefs and the other Asian Dynasties. Does
this matter?

Do the manuals give no guidance on LAN gaming?

your main problem will be the firewall .... Vista and XP both have firewalls

A 4 port ADSL modem is also a router, so in effect the PCs are connected
together through the router but their firewalls prevent them from seeing one
another. Easiest way for you to fix this is :
(a) find out the IP address of each PC, they should start 192.168.etc (not
sure how to do this in Vista)
(b) disable the firewall on one of the PCs (not sure how to do this in
Vista), then search for its IP address on the other PC (not sure how to do
this in Vista)

For 100% safety, disconnect the ADSL modem from the internet (and if you are
using WiFi, make sure your security is higher than WEP)

all you half to do is "Disk Swap" first run the game on one computer when it
is at the main menu take the Cd out and run it on the Second one i hope this
help
