After XP Repair - System scrambled

I've just done a Repair to XP Home thru Setup (following KB314503) and find
that the files & folders all seem to be intact but the 3 Users are not in
Welcome, applications don't launch, Outlook Express and IE are 'new', etc.
It looks like I have to install SP1 and updates also.
Do I practically have to start from scratch again uninstalling and
installing applications? How do I get things reattached easily?
There is also a 'C' folder with Windows. Is this a temp? Firewall is first
up. Norton AV not working now. Yikes.

Thx for assistance.
Rob

Hi Robert,

Sounds like a reinstall and not a repair install. You may have missed a
step. You will need to create new user accounts and reinstall all updates
and software. C:\Windows is not a temp folder, but may be the remnant of the
original installation.

I agree, it looks like a new install over existing.
There's a few other things that indicate it isn't quite right - at boot up
it asks for the "Operating System to start" - will see if I can 'repair' it.
I had started to use the BSOD repair suggested by Digital Webcast article:
http://www.digitalwebcast.com/2002/03_mar/tutorials/cw_boot_toot.htm
I'll try to undo the Recovery Console changes this made to the
Windows\system32\config files. Hopefully this won't then screw up the
'install-over'. (Or maybe it will correct it and fix everything like the
Repair was suppose to do)

If you see any 'challenges' I might not be aware of, let me know.

Incidently the 'C' is a Folder in (Local Disk) C: Interesting, huh? I'm
thinking remanent of the install (it wasn't there before).

Also, from what you see so far, is it simply a case of re-installing the
applications to get them working again or is it more like an uninstall
first?

Thx
Rob

Hi Rob,

You may get a chance to fix the original installation if you reboot the CD
and start the installer. See if it offers to repair an existing
installation. Also, if the "C:" folder was not there before, it may be the
install folder of the new installation.

I've done that and yes, I go thru the Repair Option in Setup as compared to
a clean install.
XP works but is very unstable - easily goes to BSOD. I'm going to try and
complete Digitalwebcast's BSOD fix (link below) in Recovery Console to see
if I can bring the system back.

I'll leave the C folder for now - it most likely is for the Repair
installation as you suspect.

Thx
Rob

You were right, Rick. After some extensive experimenting, the Repair was not
sufficient as many BSOD's surfaced.
There sometimes was some difficulty (errors) in getting XP to boot up
properly and that's where the Digital Webcast info was helpful to get it up
and running.
I'm now going for the fresh install on my partitioned C:
(See "Clean install question" for this continuing saga)

Thanks Rick for the assist.
