I tried restoring in safe mode but I could not get past "Confirm Restore
Point Selection". I clicked next but nothing happened.
Thanks for any help.

you might try to boot
up with your windows
cd and access the
repair/recovery console.

at the disk prompt
run the following
commands>:

chkdsk
fixboot
fixmbr

then exit and try
to boot as normal.

Don't bother with it, db doesn't know what these commands do or when
they should be used, he's sending you on a wild goose chase! There is
ever a slight chance that chkdsk might correct a file error but that
would be more of a fluke than anything else.

When you boot the Windows installation can you bring up the Task Manager
with Ctrl+Alt+Del? If yes, is Explorer.exe running?

I found a backup I did and tried to restore. Was able to get to signin
screen and picked a profile and got to the desktop. But cannot do anything,
Start menu or any applications or Task Manager by Alt-Ctrl-Delete.

I do not have a Windows install CD.

Does this happen with all your user accounts? Can you properly start
Windows in Safe Mode? Try creating a new user account in Safe Mode then
try to log on to the newly created user account.
