After upgrading to XP Home w/serv pac1 from win98SE, I did
a WinXP update, installed Office 2003, installed new Anti-
virus, installed wireless access to another computer's
wireless router for high-speed internet access, used the
computer for about 3 days and had no problem. Yesterday
is was sitting idle and the screen suddenly changed from
my desktop to a blue/gray screen with an error saying
severe disk failure. Unfortunatly, I didn't write down
everything the screen said, but it said "enter" to
continue, which I did, then same color screen comes up
saying to insert CD to complete install, which I then
inserted WINXP Home CD and pressed enter then the screen
went blank in the blue/gray color. It did nothing. I
turned off, let it sit, turned it back on and screen still
blank w/blue/gray color. Didn't have time to deal w/it
last night and have not turned back on to see if any
changes yet. Any idea what may have happened? Computer
was fully equipped to handle the upgrade and I used it
with no problems for about 3 days. I'm not an expert, but
not totally computer illiterate but definately Very
confused.

It sounds as though the hard disk has failed. If you have the tools floppy
that is usually supplied with new hard drives, you can boot from that and
run the manufacturer's diagnostics on the drive. If you don't have it, you
can visit the hard drive manufacturer's website and download their tools, be
sure to make note of their instructions, create the floppy, boot from it and
run their diagnostic. Failing that, your only choice is to take your system
to a shop and have the hard drive checked out.

I assume you have access to a computer as you posted here. Go to the manufacturers site of your HDD and download their disk check utility. This downloads to a floppy. You will then need to boot with the disk in and you should get a screen that you will have to use your keyboard to navigate through and let it check your disk for errors. Most of the utilities will repaire bad sectors. I'm not saying this is your problem but it maybe a disk failure. Good luck.
