We have been downloading the various updates for XP but then when we rebooted the CD-RW and DVD-RW drives are no longer recognized. I have tried reloading the drivers, changing cables, even changing slots but I get the same yellow "!" under device manager that says the driver is loaded correctly but the "device is not working correctly"

Well, it worked before we installed the updates

Do I need to un-install all the XP updates or is there a fix I can do that will make these units show up under "My Computer"

There are 9 "K..." updates and over 30 "Q..." updates

Many thanks.

try this:

1) Log on with Administrative Privileges

2) Open the Registry Editor:
a) Go to Start then select Run.
b) Type regedit and click OK.

3) Backup you registry by:
a) Highlight My Computer by clicking on it once.
b) Click File (Windows XP) or Registry (Windows 2000), then Export
Registry File.
c) Select export range All; to ensure your entire registry is backed up
completely.
d) Select where you would like to save this backup, name the File, and
Click on the SAVE button.

4) Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values:
a) Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
b) Highlight this key by left clicking on it once.
c) On the right hand side delete the values Upperfilters and Lowerfilters.

5) Restart your computer.

You might ALSO/INSTEAD go to:
http://www.dougknox.com/

Select 'Windows Utilities' and scroll down to 'Restore CD/DVD drives to
Windows Explorer.'

Perhaps his utility will do the trick. =)

if I remember, you might need to do another install of windows...pain in the ass but it works. I just went thru this during a clean install I just did lately. Go to device manager and uninstall the drivers,....restart the computer, go to the bios, make your cd rom the first boot.....wait a min to let the ram refresh..........restart.......I think that should get them going....if I remember correctly. Try it.....I think that is what I did......
If you do have to reinstall windows make sure after you do and you do have the cdrom etc. showing , make a restore point. That way if they dissappear then you don't have to go ALL the way back to the beginning..........Also use the scan for new hardware after you do all this. I think it will lead you in the right direction......I hope this helps

I know its a little confusing....I am exhausted
