after system recovery cannot get into windows

My friend did a systems recovery on her compact XP...don't
know what she did but cannot get into windows
anymore .....have tried all that is in the manual ie..F1 &
F8 proceedures ...F10 reloaded but could not go past the
first stage of set up.....XP was put on at the factory so
have no backup copy ....can anyone help?....Many thanks
