System crashed after weried to use add-ons for Internet Explorer. We used
the Genuine Advantage Kit disk to get it up again but now I cannot record
using RealPlayer or Sound Recorder. We get loud white noise when we plug in
the headset and it looks like it's recording but it isn't. Have checked
volume levels, line and microphone in, mute buttons. (Also, the task manager
won't close, the close button is missing.) --

Should also add that we are using Windows XP Professional Genuine Advantage
Kit with Service Pack 2.

Of course, if the computer had crashed and Windows XP had to be
re-installed from scratch, then so much all of the other driver
files that are needed by the motherboard, peripheral devices incl.
sound cards, add-on applications, etc.

Well, how about making the sound card work again? Any suggestions?

Well...the white noise seems to suggest that the output section is
working. If the input section is physically defective, then the sound
card is kaput but this would have to be caused by some drastic action,
such as overloading an input stage. OTOH, hope for software problem.
Best way to resolve, re-install the drivers for the sound card using
the original cdrom that came with it or download the drivers directly
from the website of the sound card maker, and only these.

Thanks, that worked.
