After migwiz, Windows Mail no longer can check mail except on open

I used the migwiz on two machines and now Windows Mail cannot check mail
automatically on all six accounts, at either machine, except when WM is first
opened. When you open WM, it checks all six accounts just fine. After that,
when it hits the re-check interval or when you click on send/receive, you get
the "Unknown Error has Occurred" message (with NO details at all). Anyone
know a fix for this particular bug?

Which antivirus program are you running? Any other
third party security software?
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee or Norton
security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled.
Replace with a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:

I am using AVG; however everything worked perfectly (with AVG) until I used
the migration wizard to move everything (including mail and settings) from
one machine to the other. Migwiz messed up the folders and put some of them
in the wrong place. I noticed the problems after moving them to the correct
place. Then I realized that the other computer where I used migwiz had the
exact same problem. I am gathering that Windows Mail is quite buggy - and not
likely to be fixed as Windows Live Mail is supposed to be the replacement
(whenever it comes out).

I should have added that this just happened on a computer that has run Vista
since the day it was released. There have been NO changes in antivirus (AVG),
antispyware (WinDefender) or any other 3rd part programs. This debacle is
purely a Microsoft issue, precipitated entirely by using the migwiz and
replicated ona 2nd computer (sad to say).

When you installed AVG, did you use the custom install option
whereby you can skip the installation of the mail scanning module?
If not, you may want to uninstall AVG, then reinstall it without the
mail scanning feature.

I don't see how a folder mix-up from MigWiz would cause this
particular problem. If the AVG reinstall doesn't help, try deleting
one account and then recreating it. Sometimes accounts get
corrupted for no apparent reason.

If all this fails to correct the situation, you may want to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail.

To clarify: First machine worked perfectly, with AVG, checking six mail
accounts, repeatedly, without errors. Gave that to my wife who created a new
account for herself and used migwiz to transfer settings and files from her
old computer. She also has six mail accounts, five are the same as mine.
Meanwhile I set up a new computer and used migwiz to pull my settings and
files from my old account on what is now my wife's computer. She did not
re-install ANY apps, including AVG. Her e-mail checking is broken, BUT - in
my old account (now on her computer), the mail checking works perfectly. On
the new box I built, mail checking does not work except on opening WM. The
very same mail accounts check and re-check perfectly on the first computer
but only in my old account. Maybe it is not caused by migwiz but that was the
only common denominator as far as I could see. (BTW - I am a tech with many
years experience.)

Yes, I saw your reply - sorry not to have acknowledged it. However, I had
already ruled out the possibilities you mention. (If the AVG settings were a
problem we could not have been using them successfully for eight months.) I
also tried eliminating accounts but it did not help. (I ended up eliminating
al of them and then started with just one clean account - same problem.) The
fix was quite simple if a bit laborious and tedious. Create a new user
account, hand transfer all files, recreate my customized settings in all apps
(recreating all mail rules etc.), re-installing those apps that are account
specific, et cetera. Result: No more problems with windows Mail.
BTW - I was able to replicate the problem simply by using migwiz. There is
no question whatsoever that migwiz fails in this situation and corrupts WM. I
tried a LOT of fixes and reluctantly went to creating a new account.
Actually, I created a temp account and moved everything there, deleted the
first account, then created a third account so I could use the same account
name as I started with, then put everything in by hand. Now it all works.
FWIW, this is a clean install of Ultimate from the original DVD.
