Thanks

If you were to share with us the secret identification of the
motherboard you'd have a better chance at a valid answer. But until then
a simple Google search for the MB maker's name along with IO shield
(e.g. "Asus IO shield" less the quotes) will probably go a long way
toward an answer.

Should be able to get them here:

Peter Wong
Computer Square
Street Address:
4361 Highway 7 E
Units 2,4
Markham, ON
L3R 1M1
Telephone: 905-415-0229

They are a computer parts wholesaler that sells retail and have got all
kinds of odd-ball stuff. No web page though.

What is an IO shield? If you are talking about shielding cables,
there are available slip on woven shields - pull to tighten them
up.[/QUOTE]

Sorry for the late respose but switching out MB and Girlfriend had me
busy. An IO Shield is the rectangular plate that that fits into the
back of the computer case. The IO ports (mouse, KB, usb, etc) fit
through.

Its the IO plate at the back of the computer. I have googled to death
looking for these.

What do you mean, no luck? He has all manner of them in stock. Small
misc. things aren't put on a web site. If you are in the Toronto area,
go and see him. BTW, the more common name for these a MB Back Plates.

I called them and asked if they had a back plate that would fit an MSI
motherboard. The response was a resounding no. Unfortunately I cant
stop in as I live in NB. The search continues ......

Thanks Again

Look in your local yellow pages under Computer Wholesaler, see who
distributes MSI and call them. While they won't normally sell to an end
user, they would probably make an exception in this case.

Actually, I'm sure you have a number of small independent computer
repair stores down there. They usually have a bin full of these taken
from trashed systems. Keep in mind that it has to fit both your MB and
your case.

I know what an IO shield is. What I don't know is what sort of mother
board it is meant to fit -- every manufacturer makes them to fit their
models and they aren't interchangeable.

Maybe, but in addition to the EMI it's meant to block, it
also helps to keep cables from stressing the soldered on
port blocks and preventing a short loop where air is sucked
in that open hole, travels 3 inches to the exhaust then the
pre-heated exhaust air is then sucked in same opening again.

They probably didn't want to bother with it because you
aren't providing the details.

"MSI" is not important, but the exact model of MSI, is. It
is common that other brands of board will have same port
arrangement in some models, and that other board's panel
will fit, but the details must be researched by you, not
someone else, because this is a very cheap part, almost no
profit, so it can't be worth anyone else's time to figure it
out.

You might seek a good picture of the ports on your model of
board and link it.

My apologies, I mis read the post. Its for a K8N Neo 4 platnium/SLI.

Thanks for the reply. The only reason I didnt post a link or give
specifics is for the very reason that you stated. I didnt want others
to do my work and research it, I was just looking for a generic site,
if it existed. That being said, I guess what are news groups for <g>
.....

The shield I'm looking for is for the MSI K8N NEO4 Platnium/SLI

The closest I could find so far is the type 7 offered by CensusPC
which I already had in my spare parts "room" <g> and already modified
with a dremel tool. I would like the actual one though

Here a link to the one I'm looking for.

I've tried MSI by email with no response (big surprise) and all my
local retailers and the few second hand shops.

Which is exactly why I'm looking for the proper one as I'm going to be
overclocking and dont want the added problem of thermal issues caused
by holes around the IO Plate/shield/backplate <g>.

I'd meant resellers, that they are the ones selling these
things for profit but if they dont know exactly what you
need, any time spent tracking it down would not be
worthwhile, so you'd have to find one that went the extra
mile with customer service as a priority rather than $ as
priority- and places like that are getting hard to find for
such small items.

The shield I'm looking for is for the MSI K8N NEO4 Platnium/SLI

It has an unusual rear port arrangment particularly the
audio optical port, you may need to contact MSI if all else
fails,

Well if you already have one modified, you're done....
though I seldom use dremel tools, too fiddly on such things.

When worst comes to worst I tilt up the motherboard on a
scanner, scan the ports and use a photo editing program to
get a mirror image outline of them onto a laser transfer
sheet, iron that onto a sheet of aluminum and use a drill
press to cut out series of circles. It's easier that it
might seem, but I've used similar process for other purposes
too so it may be all in what you've practiced at.

One thing about using thicker aluminum sheeting is that it's
not as likely to tear the holes, but of course it doesn't
snap in, you have to decide based on the case how to attach
it, whether it be taller and have a couple holes on top and
slits/forked bottom, or holes at each end, or more difficult
is precision holes such that the screws on the motherboard
ports hold it down (but there are fewer screws these days
with even parallel, serial and game/midi ports going out of
fashion). The other option is to make the plate smaller and
attach to a real plate cut out oversized and used as a
frame, then you can attach the new one to the old with epoxy
or screws, rivets, whatever- though sometimes clearance is a
problem, plugs like those for the audio might have fat
plastic bodies and not plug in all the way if it's mounted
on the outside.

You don't have as much of a problem as some people do
regarding the recirculation of air, because the back of that
board has so many and tall port blocks, although inevitably
it is still quite a bit more airflow past though ports,
which will tend to accumulate more dust around them.

I'd keep looking for more MSI email addresses and the above
phone number. Also contact whoever you got the board from,
we never did find out why you dont' have the rear plate
already (?).
