My HP 1160 jammed on a piece of paper today. I removed it and turned the printer off.
When I turned it back on and tried to print a page off of a web site, I found it only
printing one or two lines of nonsensical symbols, rejecting the paper, and repeating
this page after page. I've turned it off and unplugged it several times, waited minutes
while unplugged but it keeps doing the same thing. I tried letting it print away but
after about 30 sheets turned it off again.

I've seen this problem before with other printers (and this one) but it will usually
stop after a while. This time it isn't stopping. Does anyone know how to fix this
vexing problem?

Did you also reboot your computer?
If that does not fix it the first thing I would do is uninstall and reinstall
the driver for the printer.....I know there is no logic to the assumption that
the driver is corrupt but the symptoms you describe fit well with a corrupted
driver.

The problem is you have a print job in the spooler and the printer is out of
sync, so it is interpreting the control codes as something to print rather than
interpret. If you are running XP pause the print job, then turn off the
printer, then purge the print job, then turn the printer back on and everything
should be OK. For 98 or ME things can be a bit more stubborn, it can be more
difficult to pause or stop a print job. Basically what you need to do in
either case is to stop or pause the print job, then clear out the print queue.

I forgot to mention I'm running Windows 2000. I did pause and purge the printer, but I
don't remember if I turned it off in between. Anyways, the problem continued a little
longer then stopped so perhaps that was the solution. I'll remember this for the next
time it happens. Thanks to both of you for the suggestions.
