I installed Windows XP over Windows ME. But now that my
new version of Windows is installed, all of my installed
programs don't show up in the start menu, nothing is on
my desktop, and I can't find a lot of personal files.
Looking into drive C, a lot of my files are there, but
aren't actively installed anymore - and a lot of other
files have been deleted altogether. Why did this happen
and how can I restore my files back to where they belong?

During XP's initial setup, did you select the default "Upgrade" option or did
you select the "New Installation" option? You should have selected the default
"Upgrade" option. If, for some reason, you selected the "New Installation" option,
then it is likely your personal files were overwritten.
