The most common reason for this is when it "hangs" at "preparing network
connections". If this is what you're seeing, the reason is dns name
resolution, or lack there of.
Be sure that dns is configured properly and you see the srv records in the
forward lookup zone for your doamin (these will be the 4 "_" folders under
your zone) and that you can ping your domain name (xyz.com) and get a reply.
It should Only be pointed at your internal win2k dns server (this machine or
other) for dns and not also any outside dns servers like an ISP. You
forward lookup zone should also be set to allow dynamic updates.
If this is running sp4, and you have a single label domain name (no "." or
com, net, local, etc after your domain name) then dns will not register
properly until you make the following registry entries;
300684 Information About Configuring Windows 2000 for Domains With
Single-Label
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300684
If this is a brand new domain setup, I'd consider just starting over and
using a valid dns domain name for it (mydomain.com, local, net, etc) and
have it set up right from the start.
