Earlier today I got some good advice, but I'm having trouble putting the
advice to work. I was advised to: 1) --- uninstall McAfee and install,
possibly, Avast. PROBLEM: How do I get and install Avast if I can't use my
email on that machine? 2) I was also advised to move everything in the
Windows Mail directory to another directory, leaving the Windows Mail
directory empty. PROBLEM: I moved 99% of it BUT three files said they couldn't
be moved because they were being used by an open program. Those three files
were: edb.log, tmp.edb, and WindowsMail.MSMessageStore. Looking back on it,
I guess I overlooked two "open" programs: the One Note icon in the
Notification Area and the McAfee. QUESTION: Would the easy way out-of-this
be to install Firefox, then use it to replace McAfee with Avast? ANOTHER
POSSIBILITY: Since I haven't yet done any work on this new computer, another
option might be to bite the bullet and reinstall everything --- but this
time: stay away from McAfee and the Easy Transfer Cable. What's the easiest
and best way out of this mess that would be within my limited powers to
comprehend and navigate?

Thanks for your help!

1. you don't download Avast with an email client (like Windows Mail). You
use Internet Explorer.

You seem to be confusing IE with an email program. If you used to use IE to
read your email, then you probably won't be able to use Windows Mail anyway,
as it doesn't do web mail.

Bill probably means that he needs his Email to complete the registration
required for Avast - confirmation etc. They don't just download.

Bill, Dave was right. You can't use web-emails like Hotmail now. If you're on
high speed internet your provider probably has an email account already set
up for you. It's simple to set up that account to run through Windows Mail.
Or there's Gmail.
Don't worry about the short time that you need to do this. Windows has
System Restore in case the worse happens.
I have Avast and I like it. It's free! I got rid of McAfee immediately
upon discovering that it isn't free. Then I tried AVG, which is intrusive (it
required 10 min. every startup to settle down) and it let viruses through to
the point that I thought it was the cause of them.
Go with Avast and follow their setup instructions. You'll be happy.

Gmail is a truly portable email address insofar as it can be accessed fronm
any internet connection by POP or Web interface.

Unlike many POP addresses it can be accessed by proper email clients
from connections other than one's home.

It also has very efficient anti-spam and phishing technology.
