When our beta time is up will we be able to purchase a key, or use one from
a retail upgrade, or will we have to reinstall a retail copy? BTW, I love
the reading pane in explorer. Also, in XP windows key + L would take me
directly to the different accounts, now it takes me to the password screen
and I have to click switch user twice before it gets to a screen to access
the guest account. Is there a quicker way to get to the accounts screen?

Thanks!

When Vista finally hits retail you most likely will not be able to upgrade.
You will have to either "clean install" Vista or another operating system.
Just curious, why would you want to keep testing software that is buggy, not
feature-complete and is time-limited?

As to your question regarding "Fast User Switching:" the Windows+L now
points to locking your desktop, not switching users. To switch users, click
on Start and then click on the small carat located at the bottom-right
corner of the Start Menu. Click this and you will see a list of various
log-off/shut-down options.

Hi Steve,

You'll need a new key for the final release. One of the scenario's being
tested currently is to allow a direct upgrade of beta2 (and later the RC
candidates) to the next version. Presumably, this is being done so that
users of 5384 and the upcoming RC's will be able to directly upgrade to the
release product (but I doubt you will find any discount in price).

More likely it being done to test in-place installs and other scenarios. It
is purely speculative to assume that any pre-rtm edition will be upgradable
to the final.

The following is on
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx

"Upgrade limitations
You may not be able to upgrade your installation of Windows Vista Beta 2 (or
RC1) to the final, commercially available edition of Windows Vista. To
upgrade you will need to acquire the final edition of Windows Vista and you
may have to do a clean installation."

Since no one is relying on Vista for any important files, a clean
installation should not be a problem, right folks?

Besides, why would you want to upgrade from B2 or RC1? Seems like it would
just lead to problems. I would just bite the bullet and do a clean install.
Upgrading is always problematic, it seems.

You bet. Besides, an upgrade from pre-release would be very hard to
troubleshoot properly.

I would always do a clean install. I do not have faith in upgrade installs.

Hi Colin,

The beta2 to RC1 is a specific test scenario passed to certain technical
beta testers. Similar to the XP beta where this was also done, there are no
guarantees that this will work, but they are trying to make upgrades from
beta version to the final release a supported scenario.

And yes, I totally agree that no one should be relying on this scenario and
anyone should be counting on possibly (perhaps probably) having to do a
clean installation of the final version.

For PSS to be able to support a scenario like that boggles the mind. To me
it is a waste of resources. Mathematically provable test results will take
just as many resources as doing Q&A for the XP upgrade scenarios. And the
upgrade would have to be Vista Ultimate to Vista Ultimate. Nice for the
revenue stream.

For a list of all keyboard shortcuts click Start, Help and Support, type in
Keyboard
shortcuts, the first option list them all. Even though its one extra key if
you press
Ctrl + Alt + Del you get an option to switch users also, instead of logging
out.
