Can someone recommend a non-expensive ps at about 300 watts that won't
drive me crazy? The Compaq OEM ps is driving me crazy. I'm considering
buying a sparkle as they're cheap and not very noisy, but if someone
knows of something better at that price range I would greatly appreciate
the information.

You can replace the fan in the PSU, or wire it to run at 5 or 7v.

I believe Compaq has a proprietary PSU and a replacement form them will
probably be just as loud.

Assuming that your Compaq is compatable with a non-proprietary PSU (I
don't know if it is), I'd recommend a Fortron FSP300-60PN 300W which has
a 120mm fan. They can be had from Newegg or Directron for about $30 if
you live in the U.S. They are rather quiet, and are very good quality
for the price. Sparkles are made by the same manufacturer, and they may
have the same thing with a different label on it.

A good place to go for ideas about quiet PSUs is the power supply forum

I like my Antec TruePower 380W PSU. Nice, quiet, and well made. Just
make sure that the compaq PSU and motherboard you are currently using
doesn't have a proprietary pin setup that won't work with a regular off
the shelf PSU.
