Technically, Aero is the process that renders graphics on the graphics card
gpu rather than using the cpu. This is a more efficient process that puts
your graphics card to work and allows your cpu to spend more time processing
your data.
Aero is often associated with the glass borders and live previews, but that
is just a byproduct. While the glass borders could be made using older
hardware and without Aero, Aero provides a way to do this more efficently.
In fact, you might notice a speed decrease if you disable Aero. Please note
that you can disable transparency without disabling Aero.
The glass is just eye candy. The true innovation is in Aero. So it is
something new - but most of it is under the hood work. You shouldn't buy
Vista for the glass borders. Buy it for the better security though user
account control, internet explorer protected mode, address space layout
randomization, patch guard, firewall, windows defender, the new bundled
application such as movie maker, dvd maker, meeting space, and media center,
and for Aero.
