I've just helped a friend install a new nVidia GeForce 7200 video card in his
PC to allow him to run his Tiger Woods Golf game and some games for his son.
His Windows Vista Index (or whatever it is called) has now increased from 2.3
to 3.0 (the lowest score was under Graphics, this has now increased to 3.2,
the Gaming Graphics score was 3.0 and has remained as that).

The games now play OK.

However the Aero experience won't work. When we follow the steps for the
settings for Colour (32 bit), refresh rate (greater than 10Hz) etc we get as
far as setting the theme from Windows Vista Basic to Windows Aero, hit Apply
then OK, but when we click the Appearance section to turn on transparency it
still comes up as the Themes dialogue box and the theme has been set back to
Windows Vista Basic.

Can anyone advise how we can get Aero to operate?

Many thanks

You might need to refresh your Windows Experience Index (WEI) rating.
1. Click Start
2. In the search box, type Performance Information and Tools, hit enter
3. Click the Update my score link
4. Click Continue on the User Account Control dialog

Ensure the following services are running:
- Desktop Windows Manager
- Themes

(Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services).

this again is incorrect...

you can run aero even if you have never done the test to see how you score..

that card supports aero and will run aero even if his cpu is less than 3

I can tell you my experience.... First time I turned my PC (out of the
box) I had upgraded the graphics card from the vendor supplied on
motherboard video and as a result, I had to go through the process of
downloading the proper Vista drivers, etc... After installing the
latest nVidia drivers I could utilize all the power of the video card
to set resolution, play games and video etc at 32-bit color, but Aero
wasn't on, rebooting did nothing.... So I finally forced Vista to
retest the hardware and after that Aero was turned on.

I've read this is the only way to enable Aero if it is disabled. There
is no manual option to force it on. Some hardware vendors drivers I
suppose may enable Aero, but I know that wasn't the case on the
GeForce 7600 GS or the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro based cards that I
experimented with.

Once Aero is enabled, it stays enabled as far as I know.
