In spite of the "Upgrade Adviser" advising that my system and the
abovementioned display adapter would support AERO AND that an upgraded
display adapter device driver would be available on installing Vista, I see
(1) that I cannot activete the transparency effects (the GUI just freezes)
and (2) Vista tells me that a driver 6.14.10.4440 dated 2005/12/05 is the
latest updated driver! What gives? This is clearly misrepresenting the facts.

I have mine working and I suggest that you do the following.
You need to download and install the 4543 driver dated 3/23/06 for your
82945 Graphics chip from the Intel Website. You also may need to update
your BIOS (I did) and you need to allocate 128MB of main memory to your
graphics chip from the BIOS. I also needed to upgrade from 512MB of main
memory to 1GB but I have heard that this may not be required but at the
moment I don't know a workaround. After all is done you may not be
impressed with Glass since the content part of a Web page is not done with
Glass just the borders.

You need to install the LakeaPort drives for your 82945G Graphics chip look
for them on the Intel Website, mine are the 4349 version dated 5/2/2006.
They might also have been installed on your Vista system by WinUpdate. So
you might just try having Vista search for drivers on your system disk using
device manager You also may need to update your BIOS (I did) and you need to

There was a bug in a previous version of Upgrade Advisor that, under some
circumstances, would incorrectly report that systems with the Intel 915
graphics chip set were Aero-capable. This is fixed in the latest version of
Upgrade Advisor.

At this time there the "official" word from Intel is that the 915 chip set
and driver will not support Aero.

Today I resinstalled Vista Beta 2 on a reformatted disk partition due to
problems I was having with my tuner card. During the installation I asked
it to install any updated drivers available over the Internet.
When the installation was complete my system came up immediatly with Glass
using the latest Glass Lakeport drivers available from Intel for my 945G
chipset which is the graphics chip that is part ot the 915/950 graphics
capable Intel MOBO. I did not have to do anything to make it happen since
the latest Beta 2 updates apparently contain the latest Vista Beta2 945G
graphic drivers from Intel.
So that makes it sound like the Upgrade Advisor is correct if used only with
a new installation and not one from a couple of weeks ago.

Fortunately, your system uses the 945 chipset. Intel has told us that there
will be no Aero-capable driver support for the 915G, which is what the OP
apparently has.

I never heard of anything called the 915 Graphics chip. My MOBO has the
915/950 driver system of which the 82945G Graphics chip is one part. The OP
has to check with device manager to see what actual graphics chip he is
using

No you don't understand. Read the subject line. It does not mention 82945G
anywhere. The OP has an Intel 915 chipset motherboard which is very
different from an Intel 945 chipset motherboard.

No, its not.

The 915 MOTHERBOARD chipset includes GMA900 DX9 compatible video. The 945
includes GMA950 DX9 compatible video.

There is no such thing as 915 or 945 video.

Both the 900 and 950 are Aero compatible with the proper drivers.

http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/express_flyer.htm

or more importantly

http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/915g/

which includes the statement:

Intel® 915 Express Chipset family platforms using 512 MB of system memory or
more meet all current requirements for the Microsoft Windows Vista* Capable
PC program.

Not sure why so many people are having trouble understanding this.

Tom

I don't know what you are talking about. I re-read the whole thread and see
no mention of 915 or 945 video except in one post which my post was trying
to correct. I do see "INTEL 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset" and "82945G
Graphics chip" as well as "Intel 915 chipset" and "Intel 945 chipset", all
of which exist. As far as I know the 915 chipset is Vista capable but there
are no wddm drivers for the GMA 900 graphics yet. This means it does not
currently support Aero Glass. I hope this situation changes as one of my
computers has this chipset and I hope to upgrade it to Vista once the RTM
release is out.

Not sure how I can explain it. The 9xx series chipsets have integrated
video, either GMA900 or 950.

I don't know how many time I have to say the same thing and it is really
what the OP said in his first post and is the subject of this thread. If
you have have the Intel 950/915 video support on your MOBO and you go to
device manager (like I have on my MOBO 915/950 )you will hopefully find that
the actual graphics chip that is on your system is the 82945G chip. It is
certainly not a 910 or the 950 graphics chip since AFAIK there is no such
thing. So all of you that have 950/915 grahics on your MOBO like I do and
who find in Devide Manager that the actual graphics chip is other than the
92945G chip I wish you would state what you have instead of guesing what it
is.

Exactly what I just said. The 915 chipset motherboards have the GMA 900
graphics. Aero Glass does not work with GMA 900 as there are no wddm
drivers. Vista works just fine.

Read the subject of the posts. That is what the GMA 900 (graphic subsystem
of Intel 915 chipsets) shows up as in Device manager. The OP's on board
graphics does not support Aero Glass.

No problem. I wouldn't have been so emphatic in correcting you if not for
search engines indexing the news groups. Many people will be searching for
Vista drivers and may get wrong info.
