had major problems over the weekend after picking up the elitetool bar adware.

After trying several of the main adware/spy removers still had the faults. Ultra Win Cleaner made it worse some how ???? that just doesnt figure.

Over four years of computing and I was amazed at the ammount of crap webroot spy sweeper found. I have now have an extra 400mb + free space after all the junk has been trashed.

Even with a firewall /N orton AV I still got caught out.

Just goes to show your always learning.

You’re under a misconception, along with 90% of home users, that an Antivirus Program & Firewall offer 100% protection.

Sorry to say this, but an AV program will only help protect your system against viruses ... unfortunately many people are also misguided in thinking that an AV program protects you from the other nasties out there. They do not.

A "Worm" is not a Virus, a "Trojan" is not a Virus, "Spyware/Malware/Adware" are not Viruses ... don't expect a firewall to protect you when you visit ANY website, when you visit any sit you told that site who and where you are, and a whole host of other benign information.

Download Microsoft Anti-Spyware, SpywareBlaster, IE-Spyad and Microsoft's Update Site ... use them in conjunction with Spy Sweeper (I quite like that one), Norton and your Firewall ... that way you'll at least be 75% "protected" against further attacks. You could invest also in a "Trojan Scanner" but there are none for free.

I hope you're still learning. ;)

I use Microsoft Anti Spyware... and yesterday i got asked this exact question:

a new program is trying to run at startup, do you wish to allow Microsoft Opperating System (R) to run on startup?

I wasa tempted to click "deny" and see what happened, but i decided not too

haha, I'm actually not sure if that is a joke as it is quite possible to see something like that in windows ;)

Heh, good one Ian:D
what do yall think about spybot search and destroy?

AntiVir (a freebie anti-virus program) stops Trojans and Diallers, which is more than most dedicated AV programs do.

Install AntiVir, go browse some iffy sites, and you'll soon get an AntiVir options window appear, where they recommend you to 'Deny Access'.

Grisoft AVG, another freebie AV Program, does not do this.

Spybot Search & Destroy is good, but they do have an annoying problem constantly detecting a 'DSO Exploit' which isn't actually there, although they do have a fix for that bug now.

But, imo, Adaware is better. It never used to be, but it is now.

In my experience, if you use Antivir; Spyware Blaster; AdawareV1.05; Spybot Search & Destroy (all freebies) together with a hardware or software firewall for good measure, you should be fairly safe.

Not 100% safe, but mostly safe.
