Anyone got any suggestions on the simplest way to do foreign accents in Word
2000? I'm using a standard UK keyboard and work in UK English but
sometimes need to write to people in France. The operating system is XP.

I know there are several ways to do it but all the ones I'm aware of seem a
bit convoluted.

Thanks

Steve

Stephen,
Try "Insert>Symbol", you should find all the French characteristics on the
"Subset Latin 1"

do a start run charmap if it's there on WinXp or find it in accessories

thereafter make a note of the ones you want and hey presto:

left alt + 0232 does è
left alt + 0233 does é

the numbers must be entered on numeric pad so practically impossible o
laptops.

There are as you well realise several ways of skinning this particula
cat - I think ctrl alt e used to work but this throws in Euro sybol i
Word 2000 now, but works fine in many other apps. e.g. here é. Weird.

Aha just checked again in Word the preset keycode is ctrl '

Hi deBugr,
Yes I was able to "Run" charmap with Windows XP and Word 2000.
Incidentally not all laptops are without a numeric key pad!

All recent laptops I have seen emulate the numeric keypad using the Fn key +
marked letter keys.

Graham,
I have an Acer Aspire 1700 purchased early December 2003. If you go to the
www.acer.com you will see that this model is listed in the Notebook section.
Is a notebook not classed as a laptop?
My Acer Aspire 1700 has a numeric keypad included on the keyboard.

What I meant to write was that laptops *without a separate numeric keypad*
emulate the keypad.
