Just had a text message from my son who says that he hadn't updated his NAV
(for 2 years!) and that at last his computer has been infected and he can
only boot up in safety mode. Don't know what he thinks I can do but I
wondered if I could get some ideas from people here.

Thanks
Ann

Tell him he is a very silly boy and to sort out his mess himself.

Hi Ann

He needs to either sort out some updates for his NAV or get another AV
package. There are a couple of free ones out there which are well
thought of (AVG and AVAST both get positive comments here). Whatever he
does he'll need to be able to get it onto his PC by means of a CD as he
won't I suspect be able to connect to the Internet. I know that AVAST
will fit happily on a CD as I did it for somebody yesterday to clean a
machine the owner of which thought AV was an optional extra!

He'll need to uninstall that old copy of NAV too I suspect, quite ofen
AntiVirus programs confict to reduced effect.

Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
AVG: http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1

But I'd avoid getting sucked into doing it all for him :-)

It sounds like he's in a mess, and is a bit past someone being able to
"advise" what to do to fix it other than get a local computer business to
look at it.

Once a computer's got to the state of only starting in Safe Mode and is
virus-infected it can be very difficult to offer instruction to undo it
all! (I may well be proved wrong by a brave and lucky soul though :-)

Make sure that 'brave and lucky soul' isn't you Ann!

Thank you everyone - children eh:-( . I have passed on your comments to
him. I have been telling him for ages to uninstall his NAV and download
AVG. But you know what they are like - never listen to their mothers!

Thanks again.
