Which background programs do I shut down? Which do I leave in memory?

I'd like not to make a piece of toast this first time out. In Win98 I
recall I had to shut down most everything that was running or I'd get
a "coaster". Is XP pretty much the same?

I have not had any trouble burning CD's in XP, I don't shut down anything,
just right click on the files to burn and Send to CD-RW. I am running a P4,
with 256 MB RAM and it doesn't bog down or anything. I use the built in
burning software in XP, though.
