Advice on page layout and formatting

I'm a newbie to FP but until I purchased FP, I thought I was fairly
proficient at HTML and have created a number of websites using my own HTML
code.

I started with what I thought was a fairly simple page and cell layout, but
as I've cut and pasted images, text and embedded HTML tables, the cell
formatting has altered and become completely unworkable.

Inside the blue outlines of the layout cells I created there are a number of
smaller cells with a dotted border that make it impossible for me to re-align
or re-size my layout cells for each new page I create.

I've tried adjusting the HTML code, but it appears I have tables inside
tables inside tables and I have no idea how or why they are there. If I try
to delete what I believe is unnecessary code, it throws the whole page
structure out of alignment.

Consequently, my web pages are totally out of alignment, with large sections
of white space because of these rogue "cells"? inside my structure. Although
I've deleted the pages and started again on many, many occasions, it keeps
happening.

What am I doing wrong? :-(

Have you enabled the alignment grid, and Snap to Grid options?
View->Ruler and Grid->Show grid
View->Ruler and Grid->Snap to grid
View->Ruler and Grid->Configure

When you insert a layoutcell, you actually insert a single celled table.

I never use Layout tables and cells[1].
I find it much easier to design my own tables and layouts, split and merge
cells as needed without using the cumbersome Layout tables and cells
provided by FrontPage.

[1]I have occaisionaly started a page using a Layout table design, then
removed all the layout comments and cell sizing from HTML view. This leaves
a basic shape which can be moulded to whatever I want, but I find it easier
to start from scratch.

Sometimes the productivity features of FrontPage get in the way of
productivity.
