advice on AV pls

Hello, I'm looking for an AV prog which would suit my laptop best, pay or
free. Thanks to all.
Win ME-Pentium 350 MMX -96MB Ram.

I would advise you to look at either AVG (free or pro versions, both
are good) and NOD32. Avast! is another but it can be pretty heavy on
resources and your system won't handle it very well IMO.

I use AVG7 Pro and love it however NOD32 is also an excellent program
however it is also has a higher price (too high for a regular home
user IMO). AVG7 Pro costs just £23 for a 2 year all inclusive
license, with prices like that you can't complain :D

I agree AVG or NOD32 are best for resource use, I use NOD32 usually but have
AVG7 as a backup just now I'm using AVG due to an XP fault I have to sort
out.

AVG6 Free works well on most systems. Light on resources, and has good
detection if you keep it updated, which is true of any AV. I am sure there
are lots of others here with varying opinions and they'll be happy to
promote their favorite programs. :-)

However, the best AV protection you can get at any price is to practice Safe
Hex and use your common sense. First; read up on the various types of
viruses and what to watch for. Second; sedate your mouse so it don't get
click happy the minute messages hit your inbox. Third...in order...if it
sounds like a really great deal, it ain't. If you think the Date of the
Month went to all the trouble to find your e-mail address and is hot after
you, NOT!! And, if you think Billy G has told MS to send you a personal
message about protecting your security, he didn't. Heh...he has enough
trouble keeping up with MS's own security woes to worry about you and yours.
Fourth; don't rely only on an active AV, you should also have an on demand
program as a backup. I use F-Prot as my backup. But, there are others that
work well too.

If you are going to use a P2P File Share a Correctly Avast will catch
them. I haven't noticed a decline in performancee from AVG to Avast

Example: AVG6 is a program that you have active all the time, to catch most
of which comes through the slop chute. But, an on demand program is one that
you start, initiate yourself. F-Prot works in DOS, so it bypasses all the
Windows blocks that might cause some files from being detected. Not that
much of an expert on the hows of the on demands, but, there are plenty here
who are, and they can explain in more detail than I. But, you should have a
plan B for protection, just to be sure. Some use the TrendMicro House

But...I personally don't like the idea of having to rely on being able to
get access to the Internet for a back up AV. See....there are some viruses
that can disable your active AV, like AVG or any other such type of AV
program, or, your access to the Internet so that you can't a) activate your
active AV or b) get to one on the Internet. That is why I have a DOS AV
like F-Prot. It will usually work when nothing else will.

A DOS AV is sorta like your American Express card, or cell phone...best not
to operate without it. I just happen to like F-Prot, and it was
recommended to me by many of the experts. Others here have their fav's and
that is fine. They all work. ;-))

For more information on how the DOS AV's work, and about F-Prot, take a look
here. It will explain how it works and why you need good DOS backup. Some
viruses can't be cleaned through Windows, so you really need a DOS based AV
as well.

Thank you very much...I'll look into this. I have tried the Avast once
before and did not like it that well, but it was a while back. I'll take
another look... ;-))
