Hi, i am basically wondering if anyone can help me decide whether or not to increase my memory. I have recently bought a alienware area-51 computer (purely for gamin) which can hold upto 4gb of memory. I am thinking of getting 2 x 1024 and 2 x 512 chips, putting my memory upto 3072mb. Is it worth it??? I have been told yes by some and no by some, any ideas would be great.....

Thanx

whats ur current memory?

thats imporatant firstly!

Nope!

I would leave it at the 1gig you have ... Many of the latest chipsets for Intel based systems are starting to require DDR2 SDRAM. Shame on you Intel.

... AMD has yet to begin supporting DDR2, and for a good reason. In the past, DDR2 memory has been plagued with high latencies which reduced its performance below the cheaper and more available DDR

DDR2 is supposed to be the successor to DDR. It will be in due time once the price drops down to the level of DDR

... and the performance exceeds that of DDR.

;)

You can get low latency memory though!! Would i not notice a performance change with 3072mb specially now games need high performance to run at peak!!

now then...... its 512mb right now but i do want to upgrade just not how much to upgrade it by?
Your sums don't add up ... but if you have 512, another 512 will help out XP ... any more would really just be a waste of good money.

Memory = performance  err, no ... CPU = performance.

Memory is a "storage device" ... but a dam lot quicker than any HD will ever be.

Now if you can "load" the whole Game into memory then yes, you should see a 'performace' boost ... 3gig is NOT going to make anything run any quicker. ;)

Right i reakon i'll just go for another 512mb then.
Make sure it is the right match for your system ... DDR2 can be a little trickier to match-up than plane-old DDR.

Don't be too dissapointed if you don't see much improvemnet ... XP will thank you though.

The m-board takes PC4300, DDR2, 533mhz.........i have only found that spec by Geil so far. Any ideas???
I'm afraid not ... not sure if OCZ have any yet, maybe worth a look.

:o

i think either get urself another 512mb stick
or get one 1024mb stick to make ur memory 1.5gb
thatll sort it out

remember PSD, you should always balance your RAM - if you have 512 in one slot, and 1GB in another, it is not advisable.

interesting

i didnt know that thanks

how much of a diffrence will it make
it will still work tho

Dont you only need 3 GB for something or other... dont remeber what.

id say you only need 1GB for gaming, you'd only need more if you were doing CAD or maybe video encoding

The problem is now that the highest spec games recommend you having 1gb of memory. I always like to have more than the recommened spec and also as games advance the 1gd recommended memory will increase.
