Hi,
A client has just called me and asked if I could set up a system by which
she can synch files at the end of the day between 2 computers in 2 different
offices, 25 miles apart. The kicker is, neither office is in a populated
area, so they each can only connect thru dialup.
As far as i've been told, the bulk of the data transferred will be
1-directional, except also that a small bit will have to be transferred in
the opposite direction first. I'm racking my brain trying to figure out
what the best solution to this may be (i am aiming, at this point, to use
Freeware, especially since i don't want to have my clients pay for something
only to try it and have it not work very well).
I was thinking at first of setting up FTP clients / servers on both systems,
and teaching the lady how to use the FTP client and first upload stuff from
A to B, then download the necessary stuff from B to A. This would be
advantageous in that it would be relatively easy for one person on one
machine to do all the file-transferring necessary. But I'm stuck as for
what to do about the dialup -- specifically the fact that their IP's are
bound to change daily if they dial in each day. I've used dyndns.org
before, but i don't know how it would help in this case. Any suggestions
here?
Another idea i've been mulling over is using some approach that's decidedly
less high-tech ... such as set up AIM clients on both systems with unique
usernames, and just have them fileshare with each other that way (i'm
assuming at the moment that there would normally be people in both places).
Or, i could tell them to just zip everything up and send it via e-mail at
the prescribed time of the day. But I don't really wanna resort to this
unless i really really have to.. it just seems that there should be
something easier out there.
Anyway, thanks in advance if anyone has any pointers / advice.
~Mike
