Ok the big crash happened and my hard drive is toast. Fortunately I made a
backup recently using NTI BackupNow to copy the contents of C: to my wifes
computer over our LAN.

Problem is I've never tested the restore process :-(

What's the best way to proceed. I was planning to:

a) Replace the drive with a new one
b) Reinstall Windows XP from the original CD
c) Recreate network shares like they were before
to get access to the backup file
d) Install Partion Magic and make a new D: partion
e) Use BackupNow to reinstall to the D:
g) Switch D and C:

But is this the best approach? I see a few problems...

The old setup had both the OS and data in C: and my optical drives were M:
and N: If I restore C: will the OS be confused if it doesn't find the drives
at M: and N: or must U move them there first? How would I do step g)
exactly?

Would I do better to install the OS from CD and just recover my data from
the backup? That would mean loosing all my email settings etc.
