Advice Needed on Color Printer

We'd like to get great grandpa (age 80 next month) a color printer for
his PC. He has a black and white printer, but now that he has a great
grandchild, he'd like to be able to print out color pix for their
refrigerator or whatever.

What I need is a simple to use printer, and maybe one that comes with
some basic picture printing utility that would allow him to print
different sizes from his AOL emails or if I send him a CD with images.

He doesn't have a digital camera, and I don't anticipate him getting
one... so I don't need a camera-docking printer. He might
occassionally want to print a whole web page, otherwise a 4 X 6
printer might've worked. And maybe that's all he needs if we leave
the old printer hooked up to the parallel port and rig a USB cable to
the new printer. I'd prefer sticking with a major brand like Epson or
HP so if he figured it all out, he could print on glossy photo paper
down the road. For now its basically high quality bond.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Tough call! I don't know how his computer skills are. I think that any newer
printer would do well. It can get tricky for many people I think with
loading special papers properly then setting up the utilities etc. I would
look at HP, Canon, and maybe epson, to see which one has the easiest
utilities to use.

You could just set the utility to have two options, a photo preset with high
quality and a text preset for him to choose from, that is if you dont mind
printing pictures on plain white paper. I've printed out on plain paper and
must say they came out really nice without any dissappointments! If this is
the case then you could probably get any decent printer and be happy! I
would avoid epsons, although they make nice prints they have some of the
most costly ink. canon is one of the cheaper inks.

I use an Epson Picturemate for 6 x 4s, no settings to deal with just select
the printer and print, always photo quality.
Leave the other printer for web pages.

You might take a look at one of the HP printers with automatic paper sense; if
he loads plain paper or photo paper it will automatically switch to the proper
printmode. The recently introduced DeskJet 5750 or 6540 might be good choices.

While he may not need the scan feature the color copier and print functions may
make this a good choice.
