I'd like to learn more about using the security features
of Access rather than using NT's file permissions, but
frankly I find the Help entries confusing and of little
value (surprise!). Can anyone suggest a good book,
online course or other venue to get an in-depth
understanding of how these permissions work rather than
just a glossed-over reference to them as most of the
books I've seen provide?

You need to start out with the Security FAQ. There is a link to it on the
Security page of my website.

Further to Lynn's advice:

(1) Do not try to secure your only copy of a database. Always keep an
unsecured copy, so if things go wrong, you can just give up & start again.

(2) Remember to *write down* the values you use when creating workgroup
files & adding users to workgroup files. If you have those values, you can
re-create a functionally identical workgroup file, if the current file gets
lost or corrupted.

(3) Getting it right is *very tricky*! You really need to follow every step
precisely, in the order shown, adding & omitting nothing.

TC
