Got in my son's A7N8X-DLX and pair of 3200 dual channel corsair. It posts
fine with a (used) 1700 athlon while we are waiting for the barton prices to
drop....

Anybody have any suggestions on replacing the existing CUV4X (intel pentium
3) and keeping all the existing software and desktop ie: documents, address
book, email, div x, mp3 drivers, etc.

I can easily clone the disk in his old CUV4X using Acronis TrueImage,
but I suspect that when it boots up with the new motherboard I will see that
blue screen and get a memory dump. I can put the original XP cd in the
cdrom and boot XP but I dont want it to totally overwrite the drive where
the mail, documents and all the stuff is it took him a while to accumulate
and install.

I remember trying to do something like this on win2k a couple of years
ago and got as far as the "repair console" before I gave up and did a clean
install.

After swapping the motherboard and hardware, but before booting into Windows
XP for the first time, perform a Repair Install as detailed here:

Then reinstall drivers and Service Packs.

thanks, this showed how to doit. i was unaware of the 2nd "R"epair option
following a normal boot. That is what went wrong the first time and that
repair console seems to be worthless

this was torture....I made a copy of the XP SP1, DirectX9, and the ie61
(microsoft's "network version" where I work using the T1 connection and
burning a cdrom. This was to avoid having to download the updates at home.
When I finally got XP up, it failed to connect for activation as I had
forgotten to disable zonealarm before cloning the disk. I had to call in
and give a 44 digit # over the phone twice, the 2nd time to a real person.
I ended up not being able to use the XP SP1 and ie61 that I had burned
beforehand as i got an error message about "cannot install a checked/debug
version over a free one or vice-versa" It took about 3 hours over dsl but
I finally got all the updates in place. Here is a link to the aida32
analyzer. It got my corsair memory correct, but seems to think the a7n8x is
a SLOT-A.

FWIW, here is a benchmark of three asus systems running 3dmark2003 and WIN
XP pro

note that the cuv4xd is pretty much maxed out while the a7n8x has room to
grow.

It's slightly odd AIDA32 ver3.70 saw the CPU as a Slot1. Normally, that
utility is right on the money. Using an image is pointless where hardware
changes have been made. A better idea is to slipstream SP1 into the Windows
XP CD and make it bootable. Perform a clean install. Then it's just a matter
of installing drivers, the latest updates, and application software.
Creating additional partitions to store mail, documents and data is a way
around some of these challenges
