Can technology and visual aids be more of a distraction than a helpful
component to a presentation? How could it change to be more effective?

Yes.

How could it change to be more effective?

Consider the message you want your audience to receive.
Consider your audience and how they might best receive your message.

Before using visual aids in the first place, or adding anything to the visual
aids you're using, consider whether the addition makes it easier for your
audience to receive your message.

If it doesn't help, leave it out.

Now a question for you: was this a homework assignment?

Probably a bit controversial here! I've read lots of research (especially Dr
Richard Mayer) that claims delete all technology not directly needed - less
is more! This is only a minor part of his work but its often quoted.

For me the experts are TV advertising people. Ask yourself then:

Do they use lots of fairly gimmicky technology to make the message stick?

(You might also ask how often they use bullet points!!)

Did that answer the question / help?
