Advantages of more memory for a specific work?

I have 2 x 512mb Kingston memory, XP Pro, AMD 64 3700+, 2 fast drives
and AIT AIW 9800 pro

I have captured in MPEG2 format and will need to convert these to DVD
format (i.e. VOB files etc.)

Will I benefit from more memory? Also, what are the advantages of
going over 1gb of memory?

Start the conversion process running.

Press control-alt-delete to bring up the Task Manager.
There is an option in there, to display the current amount
of RAM being used.

How much memory is the system using ? Is the entire 1GB full
or is there lots of space left over ?

By using the Task Manager, you can see for yourself whether the
machine is starved for RAM.

Is there any other way of getting task manager up? I asked because I would
like to check a PC remotely. Only problem is when I try CTRL-ALT-DEL it
brings up the local Taskmanager and not the remote one.

Thanks

Right-click in an empty bit of the taskbar and select Task Manager from the
menu. Or Start -> Run... "taskmgr". (You can also use Windows + R to bring
up the Run dialog box.)

Or do what I do: put a shortcut (with "Run: Minimized") in Start
Menu\Programs\Startup, set it to Hide When Minimized and just leave it
running all the time.

Start > Run > Open: taskmgr

But it will never show all the memory as used ? I thought XP will swop out
to the hdd to keep some memory free, correct me if I am wrong tho

ctrl-shift-esc, but that'll probably get captured locally too. It's
easier to press one handed than ctrl-alt-delete.

Kind of. You can google "thing king" for a layman's description of
virtual memory and swapping.

Otherwise, bring up taskman and go to the performance tab.

[Physical Memory] shows
(total) how much RAM you have
(available) how much of your ram chips is available right now
(system cache) how much of your ram chips is in use as disk cache

[Commit Charge]
(total) shows how much total memory (including swap) is in use
(limit) shows total memory available, RAM+swap
(peak) shows and the most you've had in use since last boot.

shouldn't think you'll see a lot of benefit from going beyond 1 gig, unless
you're multi-tasking bigtime
