I have just rebuilt my PC to Vista RC2 build 5744. Before undertaking a wipe
a load I took a complete system backup using the backup utility on RC1. This
was onto a USB drive (drive E). Now I want to restore some files but are
unable to.
I used Advanced Restore: then Files from a backup made on a different
computer; then selected my USB drive E which clearly contains folder called
'WindowsImageBackup' with backup and catalog files.
BUT the restore then says 'Windows was not able to find any backup sets on E:\

Any ideas how to get my data back which is clearly there????

Ross, it sounds like you created a backup using CompletePC Backup, which is
a type of image file that you can use to restore your operating system. It
also sounds like you are trying to use the Vista File and Folder Backup tool
in Vista to restore an individual file from your CompletePC Backup.
Unfortunately it is not possible to restore individual files from a
CompletePC Backup. However, if you restore your previous operating system
(using your CompletePC Backup), you can run the Vista File and Folder Backup
to create your backup from RC1, and then restore the files you'd like from
RC2.

Hope this makes sense!

Jill is most likely correct. That is a common mistake, but if it is, it is an
important lesson. I have used this option and will advise anyone who is
willing to do this to do so. It is an option that rocks my socks off. As soon
as I have my system running just the way I like it, I do a complete pc
back-up. This way, I can fiddle around and screw everything up, and if I do,
I can restore it to where it was running perfectly.

I hope you might be able to help me... I created a backup of my documents etc
using the Vista Business Backup and restore center. This backup resides on a
directory on the LAN. I did NOT do a complete PC backup (though I wish I
had).

I have suffered a crash which unfortunately wiped out / killed my harddisk.
After reinstalling Vista, I then tried to restore my documents etc from the
backup. I can confirm I have access to the directory the backup was stored,
and yet I receive an error message that says that the file could not be found?

Any ideas how to get my data back are most appreciated.

Michael

I have a DELL XPS 420 with a Maxtor 250GB ext hard drive... I did a
'Complete PC Backup' to B: drive (The ext Maxtor)
Next, I rebooted and used the system repair from the boot menu... this
formated my hard drive and set everything back to the DELL factory
defaults... re-installing Windows Vista Ultimate, Office 2K7, and all the
other DELL junk...
Now, I'd like to restore the computer to before the DELL repair... the files
are all still on the B: drive, I can see them there...
However, when I go to 'Restore files' -> 'Advanced restore' -> 'Warning -
Continue' -> only the 'Files from a backup made on a different computer.' is
enabled and already has a tick in the radio button -> 'Next' -> 'Looking for
backup devices...' -> I select B: drive -> 'Next' -> and it tells me "Windows
was not able to find any backup sets on the B:\ Please select a different
location"
I've also tried to use the boot menus repair feature and it doesn't see the
backup sets either...
Please help ...
