I have installed a standalone W2K Adv Server. I do not
have it networked, no physical network cables attached. I
have installed it to practice installing and configuring
it prior to taking my 70-215 exam.
My problem is this: I have installed and configured DNS
with dynamic update. I have set the domain name suffix.
Whenever I try to install AD it gives me an error that
it "cannot contact the DNS server to verify the domain
name".
This may sound dumb but do I have to have a physical
cable attached or loopback plug connected to it? Which
does not make since to me since everything is co-located.
Help!!

Install the network loopback adapter. You haven't mentioned whether a NIC is
present or not. Since W2K will detect network media on NIC, connect a utp
cable even if other end is unattached. Then check that DNS points to itself
using 127.0.0.1 and not the staticly assigned ip_address.

Edit the registry:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters, value DisableDHCPMediaSense,
value type: REG_DWORD, data 1. Reboot.
