Can someone tell me the deal with using an adsl router.
I have set up a router before with a cable connection where you use cat5
cable and rj45s and network cards, but a friend has asked me to do the same
for him with adsl which uses the phone line and a usb connection to his pc.
What type of connections come out of the router? what do I need other than
the router.

basically only difference is that the phone line goes into the ADSL router
instead
of a cable

A router is essentially the host computer for the internet connection...
The modem gets connected to the router with a network connection, ie-
RJ45/CAT5 UTP cable, but not to any other system... you do not connect the
modem to the user's PC with USB.

I would never advise getting a modem that only has a USB connection. If
that one does, consider returning / exchanging it for a full-featured
modem else you can't use the router, at best you would have to set up a
desktop PC as a software router instead, a poor solution compared to a
ready-made router unless you have additional, other useful services you'd
run on the PC-as-a-router box.

You'd be using the ADSL router in lieu of the DSL modem. Connections:

Phone line (RJ45) to wall jack and rear of router.

USB connection goes to PC.

Power connection to a wall wart placed strategically in the power bar.

On some, there's also a connection on the router out to a real phone,
otherwise, you'll need a splitter at the wall, and a filter inline
with the phone.

That's about it. Install software, configure the firewall by
telnetting into the router (the newer ones have easier HTTP webpage
based configs), and try to connect.

USB routers don't tend to incorporate hubs, so you may have to make
other arrangements if you want to share the internet connection.
