I recently increased my download limit from 400MB to 1G and in the first
day I reached 430mb before I had even woken-up. I had left Xnews to
download some binary files that total about 70mb and even if Xnews had to
retry each file twice it doesn't account for the total. I checked and
Windows update had not downloaded anything (I have already installed XP SP2
from CD Rom)and I don't think anything else could chew-up a large amount of
traffic. SpyBot finds nothing suspicious, I do only use XP firewall (is
this bad?) and Avast was already updated previous nite. How can I find out
what it was and/or make sure it doesn't happen again and log all my
traffic?
Any advice appreciated.
Regards
Dave

Yes, consider getting a proper firewall.

Do a file search for all files created/modified in the last 36 (?)
hours. That should show many of the "new" (downloaded) files.

Thanks John,
I did do a search and even checked every log file I could find and I can't
identify the volume of traffic. My ISP says it can't be wrong (of course)
so I think I will turn the computer off when I am not using it and see if
that helps (as well as installing Kerio which I have used before). If I
check the data usage before shutting down and after booting and they
correlate I guess everything must be kosher. Is it possible I was hacked?

That's what I do. A sensible approach IMO. At least for overnight
periods.

Certainly, you make no mention of looking for keyloggers and/or
viruses and/or trojans so I am not sure how thorough your searching
was.

Your last comment is a good idea BUT I would add to it. Check your
data usage at eg. 9.00 A.M. and DO NOTHING. Then check things at eg.
3.00 P.M. The data usage should be very close to being the same.

Regards, John.
