Hi there,

I am attempting to install ADSL in my home, I was planning on setting up a
small network with a four port router and plugging an ethernet modem into
the router, however by mistake, I forgot to check what kind of modem my ISP
supplied and lo and behold, it was a USB one.
My question is, can I get a converter to plug my USB modem into my ethernet
router, or do I need to get a seperate modem. Where would I go for either of
these and how much are they likely to set me back?

Many thanks,

Stephen

No converters that I'm aware of, but there is this option:
http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2200usb.html

some usb adsl modems come with an ethernet port as well so you can
plug in your cable there for a connection to your router...check with
your isp abt the modem

Hi all - ADSL is a bit funny here in the uk. ADSL modems never come with
ethernet,
its really stupid - I don't know why.
Stephen - if you didn't pay for the modem - I'd be tempted to shelve it
completely,
and just go for a complete router package with modem in it - its so cheap
these days.
There is no reason to buy the vigor JUST because it will connect to your
modem.
any modem solution will use windows DUN which is best avoided.

The latest speedtouch 540 / 510v4 (or something like that) is a good unit.

check www.adslguide.org.uk - for a list of suppliers.

http://www.solwise.co.uk - also supply some great stuff

The important thing is to consider what you need to do with the router. If
you need advanced
audio / webcam functionality with msn etc - you need a router that supports
uPnP. (speedtouch works well).

hope this helps.
