I bought one a few days ago, and knowing next to nothing about networks,
should I be doing anything to secure it. i.e. change anything in it ? I
had a dabble with some of the "filters" in it but, if I restrict anything,
then IE6 gets really snotty ! I fancied I read somewhere, ages ago, that
one might need to set a DNS address somewhere to act as a black hole ? :-)
....and what on earth are all those settings in it - never seen so much
gobbledygook ! I almost had to learn how to be a damned telephone engineer
to get the thing set up - I thought that's what the DHCP part was all about.
I only bought it so that I cold leave other peoples PC's churning away on a
rj45 lead doing Windows and other software updates, and still be able to use
the web.

TIA

regards, Richard

p.s. it's a Linksys WAG6354G

They really aren't that difficult, and often factory defaults are
sufficient. If it's a wireless unit, you want to assign a key, but otherwise
it should be pretty much straight forward. The "tough" part is setting it to
use your 'net connection, this depends highly upon how you currently
connect. DHCP should take care of the machines, provided they are all set to
get thier IP dynamically.

You need to double check your model number as the one you gave is not a
valid number.

oops! sorry, it's a WAG354G ...eyesight ! must've thought the G was a 6 as
well.

It is wireless but, have got that part switched off because of mother's
pacemaker - we try to keep all close-range RF down to a minimum.
Other peoples PC's connect okay on LAN leads ok, ...so THAT's waht the DHCP
is for !

thanx, Richard

I turned it over and shone a torch on it, silly blue label with white
print - not the best colour combination !
it's a WAG354G
