Firstly - I can't decide what group this belongs in,
please forgive if inappropriate here.

I have a 1mbps internet connection which keeps
disconnecting itself - sometimes it's fine for as much as
a couple of days, other times it disconnects several
times in one day.

My ISP says that this is an issue with quite a few of
their customers who use Windows XP, and they have no
solution to it.

I'm living with it, but that's just because it's never
yet cut me off at a life-or-death moment! Any clues?

Many thanks, Patricia.

I guess your ISP is lying.
They are blaming their poor service on XP.
Who is the ISP

I don't think they're lying. I never had any problems
with Win98SE. My ISP provides Video On Demand as well as
the internet connection, they're Homechoice.co.uk.

I should have said - The reason for the cut-off as
reported by Windows is usually "Error 633".

Could a laptop connected to my desktop have anything to
do with it? The two systems are "always on".

Patricia.

.
"Error 633 - the modem (or other connecting device) is
already in use or is not configured properly."

Now you know what error 633 is go to help and support on
you start menu enter error 633 into address box, look
around the links and will get a lot of troubleshooting
help that will have questions only you can answer.

My apologies to your ISP.
Error 633 is usually associated with a Modem problem. (Modem already in
use??)
Reinstalling the modem drivers may help.
I guess that the laptop connected to your desktop is the problem but I am
not sure of an immediate solution.

I already knew Error 633 says that - I also sometimes get
680 "no dial tone". These are error reports that appear
when the connection suddenly drops after hours/days of
problem free surfing - then it may drop several times in
a day. My modem was replaced a few days ago during an
upgrading of the service package, but there's been no
change in the unreliability of the connection. As
already said, no problems whatsoever with Win98SE.

In order to reconnect following a "drop", I have to
reboot my PC. Sometimes it then connects automatically;
sometimes it tries to but reports Error 633, but if I
ignore that and go to "Start/Connect to" it connects
immediately.

Oh well, I thought Microsoft might have heard of the
problem vis-a-vis XP, which is why I didn't go into
specifics in the first place.

Unlucky me,

Patricia
