Hi Angie :-)

It is possible you have a hijacker, malware, spyware or parasites on your
system that can cause this problem. In addition to running your updated
anti-virus program, you should do the following to be sure none of these
are present on your system.

Make sure the SpyBot and AdAware are updated before running, even if yo
ujust downloaded them, then follow all instructions carefully:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
Also be sure to use the HijackThis. Please do not post your log to this
newsgroup, but to the SpywareInfo or the Aumha HiJackThis forums
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30, to allow the experts there to
evaluate your log and advise you of the necessary steps to clean your
system.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Also, get a copy of WINSOCKFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
and
AdAware SE
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
Update immediately after installing before using

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

I've hijacked, spyware & adaware, etc. No luck. Does anyone have new
strategy for removing this software? Or, please provide a telephone
number for the creators so I can give them a piece of my mind. Their
response to my e-mail inquiries has been to send me a virus
attachment. Thanks in advace.

Try the following:

1. Download AboutBuster and unzip to your desktop. Open AboutBuster and Hit
update and 'Check for Update'. If there is a newer version hit 'Download
Update'. (Do not run About Buster yet)
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster

2. Be sure to Enable Hidden Files, then go to Safe Mode

3. Run SpyBot, AdAware and then HJT, in that order.
4. Save the last HJT log
5. While Still in safe mode, run AboutBuster twice and restart normally.
6. Post the HJT log (DO NOT post it to this newsgroup, but to one of the
sites listed in the information below:

Most of these pests place a copy of themselves in one of your restore
points. The only way that I know of to stop that is to disable the System
Restore feature of XP, reboot, and then run all your security scans. When
the all clear is given, enable System Restore again. The System Restore
feature is a great idea on paper, lousy in practice.

The System Restore feature is a great idea on paper, lousy in
practice.

Sorry, but, this is not correct. According to the following KB article, the
XP System Restore is exactly the same as in WinME, and works on the same
FIFO basis as ME. Anything in the SR would not affect the system, and would
eventually be safely flushed out without any action necessary on the users
end, nor pose any threat to the system integrity while in the SR folder.
While your scanners may pick up the virus or malware there, you can just
ignore it.

also........

Noel Paton - MS MVP - Website information on WinME System Restore
He is an expert on System Restore in both ME and XP:

Get rid of Viruses in C:\_Restore

You don't need to do this - System restore will get rid of them itself given
time.
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/quiktipsr.htm

You should never disable or empty the SR if at all possible, as it may be
the only lifeboat you have when things go bad and you are left with no way
to undo or resolve the problem. It is like having your very own 'instant
replay' or "King's X", and can make all the difference in whether you have
to completely reinstall, or worse.
