ads in messenger service

I'm getting application popups (and copies stored in the
event viewer) which are ads on my win2k server.

I don't think I've installed anything to allow this, and
existing tools like spybot don't erradicate them. Can
anyone tell me how to hunt these down? I've looked in
the registry as well, but no luck.

thanks!

Hi,

That means your system is insecure and wide open to the world! Please
install a firewall and/or buy a hardware firewall/router as soon as you can!

For Windows 2000 there are several free software firewalls, including but
not limited to:
Zonealarm ( www.zonealarm.com ) - I don't really recommend using it on a
real server
Sygate ( www.sygate.com )

Shut down the messenger service! will stop all of them
getting through, thats the only way you can stop it, or
you could block the port that messenger service uses on
your server to the outside world (internet).
Unless you use this service for sending messages
(intranet or internet) then you will need to leave it.

Stopping the Messenger service is covering a 40 foot ditch in front of your
house with some leaves. You can't see the hole, but it's still there and
you can fall through it at any time.

Messenger pop-ups are a warning. The fact that they are received means the
computer is open to the world. Firewalls are necessary

I have the same problem but I'm totally firewalled. I'm connected to
a router and my DHCP is turned off. I've gone to www.grc.com to check
out the vuneralibilty of my ports and I'm in true stealth mode.

Now to the original question is how does one turn off the messenger
service so we don't get unwanted pop-ups.

thanks
