I recently lost a win2k DC (primary); luckily we had a backup DC (secondary)
that we "promoted". I just built a new DC and promoted it to a DC and would
like to split up the Catalogs up between them. The primary is our Exchange
server and the secondary is file sharing. What is the appropriate way to
split up the Catalogs between the two severs to increase performance

No secondary or primary in AD. Just DCs. T
that we "promoted".

No such thing for an existing DC -- DCPromo only creates DCs from Servers
which would not work if you lost the only DC.

You build a Server and DCPromo to DC.

In a single domain Forest make every DC into a GC.

You cannot "split it up" -- you can share the job or load by making
multiple
GCs.
