Dear All,

I have encountered a problem on WinXP Pro with SP1 and
Access 2002.
I have deployed a project at a customer site and the
deployment also installs MDAC 2.8.

When opening the ADP file the title bar
shows "disconnected" and trying to connect to the MSDE
using File > Connection fails as the connection window
does not shows up.

Trying to create a connection programmatically also fails
with an error object does not exists.

Any assistance on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Eli

Hi Eli,

How about if you connect to MSDE by opening NorthwindCS.adp, the sample
project that ships with Access (Help menu_>Sample database)?

We may need to make sure the MSDE service is running, go to Start->
Settings->Control Panel->Administrative Tools-> Services, make sure MSSQL
Service is running.

If the issue remains, we can try to reinstall MSDE; if we want to create a
log file, we can try the command line like below:

E:\MSDE2000\Setup\SQLRun01.msi /L*v C:\Verbose2.log

If you haven't deploy MSDE with your application, you may want to take a
look at the article; if the clients don't have MSDE installed, ADP will be
in disconnected status.

Please let me know if the above information works; if you have any concerns
or question, please feel free to reply to the threads.

Dear Alick,

Thanks for the prompt response.

Some other machines that I have deployed the application
are working fine. MSDE is deployed on the server and
working great. There is just one machine that Access 2002
is not behaving and I think is in a state of unusable in
ADP/ADE mode.

Any ADP file (not only my application) does not have the
capabilities to open the connection window (By selecting
File then Connection) , and the database starts
with "disconnected" on the title bar.

Why is the connection window not opening and even if I try
to set the connection in code it still comes with an error.

I tried to re-install Office XP with no success.

I suspect it had something to do with MDAC 2.8.

All I want to do is repair the Access 2002 and bring it
back to its stable state.

Any Ideas ?

Thanks in advance

Hi Eli,

Can the client connect to another MSDE/SQL in a new ADP? If the client
can't connect to any MSDE/SQL data source, we may try the following
troubleshooting steps

A. Make sure SP8 is installed successfully.

B. Reinstall Office by using Windows Installer cleanup utilit

1. Download the Windows Installer cleanup utility and install it. For how
to download this utility, please click the link below:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q240/1/16.ASP

2. Run Windows Install Clean Up. The steps are as follows:
a. Click Start->Programs->Windows Install Clean Up.
b. A Windows Installer Clean Up Window appears, click Microsoft Access
2002, and then click remove.
c. Click Exit.
For more information about Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, please see
the article below:
ID: Q238413 OFF2000: Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q238/4/13.ASP

3. Go to C:\Program Files. (I assume you installed Office in the default
Drive C.)

4. Rename the "Microsoft Office" folder as "Microsoft Office Old" (without
the quotation marks).

5. Insert your Microsoft Office CD to the CD-ROM.
6. Install Microsoft Office.

Please feel free to reply to the threads if you have any questions or
concerns.

Hi Alick,

Thanks for the follow-up.

I am going to customer site next Tuesday to try what you
suggested and will report back the results then.

Thanks for the information and hoping it solves the
problem.

Eli

Hi Alick,

Just tried at customer site what you have suggested.

I have completely removed Office XP then used the cleanup
utility and renamed the Office XP Folder.

I then reinstalled Office XP with SP1 & 2 and Jet SP8 and
still no joy.

Even trying to create a new ADP with new Data on the MSDE
gives an error.

The connection window still does not show up and when
trying to select from the main menu - File > Connection.
I get an error "Microsoft Access could not logon the
server. Verify that the logon information is correct" But
how can you do so if the connection window does not show
up?

Please consider it urgent as I need to sort this out
quickly.

I still think it has something to do with MDAC 2.8 it is
something external to Access XP that causing this. I just
don't know how to fix it.

Thanks

Eli

Hi Eli,

If you're working on a time-critical issue or something that's *urgent* to
resolve quickly, please contact Phone call Product Support Services and
open a support incident. This is the fastest way for you to get assistance
on technical issues. Newsgroups do have a time-lag.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;CNTACTMS

Based on my post, I think we need to check the following points:

Make sure network connection doesn't have any problem, currently, since
only one client has the issue, it seems the Server side works fine, to
determine if it is really caused by the clients side (ADP), we can create a
new ADP connecting another data source (MSDE or SQL Server), if one data
source works, the client component should work fine.

Based on the message "Microsoft Access could not logon the server. Verify
that the logon information is correct", I suspect the issue could be
related to the login account. MSDE authentication mode like SQL Server has
two modes, what mode does the client use? If the client uses Windows NT
authentication, does the client logged on to the domain with the account
that MSDE permits? By default, MSDE uses "Windows Only" authentication
mode, if the client uses SQL account to log in, we should change the
authentication mode to "SQL Server and Windows" on the MSDE side. You can
install the tool SQL Server Enterprise Manager to administrate MSDE.

Dear Alick,

Thanks for the fast response.

The MSDE on the server is using both SQL and Windows
Authentication. The PC is fully functional on the network.
The PC pings OK the Server box with the MSDE and the PC
logon the domain with no problems.
I am experienced with SQL Security and have no problem
setting it up. I used a third party MSDE Manager to setup
MSDE after install.

I have tried to create anew ADP with New Database and get
an error as well during the wizard operation. The error is
again logon error. It tried both SQL authentication and
Windows Authentication with no success.

Any Ideas? I still think it is related externally to
Access and has something to do with MDAC.

On a different Topic -
Is it possible to install SQL Enterprise Manager on the PC
to administrate MSDE? If so where can I download? Some of
our customers do not have SQL Server and we use MSDE for
simple <5 users applications.

Thanks

Eli

Dear Alick,

I have sent you a screen capture but the error is :
"Microsoft Access could not log on to the server. Verify
that the log on information is correct."

But once again the Connection window does not open when
trying to setup the connection to the MSDE. Selecting from
the Main Menu > File > Connection does not bring up the
connection window.

Thanks

Eli

Hi Eli,

This issue is really weird as so far I don't see a reason that it will
validate the connectionstring when the Project has just been created. My
suggestions are:

1. Go to Office web site and scan and apply all the update.
http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/

2. Go to windows update web site and install all the critical updates.
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

3. Reboot the system in Safe mode with Networking, does the issue occur?

4. On the "Problematic" computer, log on with another user account, does
the issue occur?

5. What data source did you install MSDE from? From VS.NET or from the
Office CD?

Please feel free to reply to the threads if you have any concerns or
questions.

Dear Alick,

I will be at the Customer Site again this week trying what
you suggested. I know WINXP SP! Is installed and last time
I have put on OfficeXP SP1 and SP2.

I have installed the MSDE2000 with SP3 from MSDN
subscriptions we have an Universal MSDN Subscriptions and
I wanted to have MSDE with SP2 in one package so I used
that one.

I did install MDAC 2.7SP1 and MDAC 2.8 as well.

Is there any tests I need to do in the ODBC Data Source
Administrator?

Thanks

Eli

Hi Eli,

Just one supplement you can try: check to see if you can link and open
MSDE/SQL table via ODBC in an .mdb on the problematic computer?

Please feel free to reply to the threads if you have any concerns or
questions.

Sincerely,

Alick Ye, MCSD

I have the same symptoms: .adp opens disconnected and
stays that way even though Testing the connection in the
connection dialog always succeeds.

We are connecting to SQL Server 2000 via a LAN from Access
2000. The interesting part is that the problem is limited
to 3 user workstations. We're all *supposed* to have
consistent configurations. Any idea what could be
different?

Note the problem is independent of network permissions and
SQL permissions: when I (it works on my PC) log on to
a "problem" PC it is still disconnected. Likewise I can
set up the connection using my dbo credentials and still
be disconnected.

Dear Alick,

As I suspected MDAC 2.8 was the cause.

It happened to me on other projects in the last 4 weeks.

On WinXP especially MDAC 2.8 may not fully install but the
user will not get any messages that this had happened.

However using the newly posted (3/10/2003 AUS Date)
component checker from the following web
address :

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyId=8F0A8DF6-4A21-4B43-BF53-
14332EF092C9&displaylang=en

Once you run the component checker against MDAC 2.8 you
discover that some files are not updates as well as
registry entry. You then have to make the changes manually
and in some cases using Safe Mode as the files in normal
mode are used or protected.

In my case oledb32.dll, dbnetlib.dll msdart.dll where the
old version (2.7) and about 8 registry keys had still V2.7
instead of Version 2.80. But in other cases I had in the
last 4 weeks it can be other files as well as part of the
MDAC 2.8 update.

After fixing these problems all is OK and application
working great.

I had a hunch from the beginning it was MDAC 2.8 !!!

I suggest reporting it to the appropriate bodies as it
happened to me on other projects with different customers
where MDAC 2.8 did not fully deploy and created and
unusable state of between MDAC 2.7 and MDAC 2.8.

Hope other people enjoy this as I wasted weeks on this one.

Thanks for the help anyway.

Eli

Hi Eli,

Thanks for sharing the resolution with us. I am passing the problem
description to our development team; they will fix that once it is
confirmed a MDAC 2.8 issue.

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving :
