Adobe Reader 8.0 new version

I've put it in on a couple of machines so far--can't say much about
it--seems to work.

"more secure" is part of the jargon used--don't know what that translates
to, in terms of actual technical meaning.

Thanks Cyrus, You know you feel really good when you watch an install
(upgrade) go so well. I installed thru Add/Remove- Adobe Reader clicked on
(click here for support information) and then clicked on ( product update)
and Abobe Reader does the rest. You do have to answer now and then to
complete the install (watch for the google toolbar, install or not to
install). This way here you let Adobe install the right upgrade for your
computer. Like Java update the other day there are so many different versions
to choose it can be confusing. Thanks again

So far most people have been unable to install it on Vista.

The new Adobe Reader 8 is required to view Acrobat 8 documents.
It can also create PDF documents (I haven't tried this yet).
And finally it is considerably faster than any previous version.

And I do like the new user interface :)

Security? So they say and what we must assume - is this a trust thing?

The reverse coloured icon doesn`t match my other Adobe Desktop Icons - how
asthetically inconsiderate. Thought they could have given the option thru
Properties>Change Icon. On my system there`s only one available!!
On the otherhand. This could be synonomous with the announcement of Adobe
Acrobat 8 also !! ;)

I can't tell what changed, because I wasn't really familiar with the feature
set of the 7.x version. I do see that there's an option to save as pdf/a in
Acrobat, which is an ISO standard for archival storage. That's probably
useful to know about. I wonder if Word 2007 can do that? I see various
references to security features, but I don't know which are new and which
have been there..

For me, as for most of us, I suspect, this version is "more secure" because
it is currently supported and updated, and presumably was written to the
best standards Adobe can manage at this time--so we'll go with it....and
measure the time 'til we see the first update which references a security
issue.

You shouldn't place questions under the signature delimiter '-- '; it
will be cut off by most newsreaders.

Adobe Reader 8 certainly takes more resources than Foxit, but I am not
sure that Foxit can handle Acrobat 8 documents. (I don't use Foxit.)

Yes. Much the same observations that I`ve seen Bill and apart from the
increased security code, the PDF thing was what struck me as particularly
useful. Word 2007? Now there`s a thing. If that facility is/was incorporated
into Word 2007, for me would make it the complete WP. Sadly for the average
user in UK, we don`t seem to be able to `trial` Office 2007 yet other than
online so I can`t comment on that.
As you say, time will tell with the next Adobe security update - now I`m
counting.

I wish there was an option to create a pdf without paying for it and without
advertisement on the free ones.
but oh well I guess Acrobat needs to make money- just too bad it costs a
fortune to buy the pro version

I just installed the new version. I uninstalled 7.08 first
I will say it loads a pdf file faster than 7.08
also the service for making pdfs is not free

Just works? I read in another newsgroup (alt.comp.freeware) the claim
that Reader 8.0 was very much faster (x 10) than Reader 7.0.

it is faster- you blink and it loads

I dunno---I've been spending time installing it rather than using it. I'll
take everyone elses word for it.

I will say that I've done a successful install of it on Vista, which I
gather isn't the norm.

Hi Robin,

I have Office XP and I use Word 2002 for all my word-processing activities,
although when I bought my current Dell machine 4 years ago, it came with
WordPerfect 10 pre-installed.

Someone in the XP newsgroups once mentioned that WordPerfect 10 (and I
presume, higher versions) could save files in PDF format, so I actually
bothered to open up WordPerfect and see if this was true. It actually did
have this ability.

I just tried it again, before responding to you, and it still works. Too
bad I don't have the need to actually create PDF files. :>

"Windows installer clean up" came to the rescue after my first try to
install version 8. It seems that the installation service of my earlier
version 7 had gone AWOL.
No timings available but subjectively V8 is a lot slicker.

Richard.
