Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional and 5.0

I cannot seem to get .pdf documents to open in Adobe
Acrobat outside my browser. I unchecked the box in Adobe
to make sure the document would NOT display in my browser,
but it doesn't work. I have always used that checkbox in
Adobe to fix that setting, but now I am wondering if there
is some setting on internet explorer that I need to
adjust. Please help me, it is driving me crazy!!!!
