When I bought my PC it came with XP installed and activated. The shop had
set it up so that when I started up my PC I was automatically logged on as
"Janice".

Does this mean that my user account and administrator account are one and
the same thing? The reason I ask is that I read several posts where the
advice is to log on as administrator and then do such and such.

Is it wrong to have just one account? My sons and I have our own PC and
therefore only one person uses each PC. What are the
advantages/disadvantages in having just one/more than one user?

I meant to add that one son uses XP pro and my other son and I have XP Home.
Is there a difference in the administrator's account in these?

Janice;
The Administrator account is hidden once another account is created.

Ta access Administrator:

Windows XP Pro:
At the log-in screen, press Ctrl/Alt/Del twice quickly
Type "Administrator"

Windows XP Home:
Reboot, tapping F8 each second.
Select Safe Mode at the menu.
Select Administrator

The profile you are currently using may or may not be an Administrator
profile depending on how the computer was originally set up.
Go to Control Panel, click User Accounts.
It will tell you if you are a Limited User or Administrator.

You should use an Administrator profile for work that requires an
Administrator.
Us a Limited User for all routine work.
Save the Default Administrator for emergencies.

If the profile you are currently using is an Administrator profile,
create another profile as Administrator account for Administrative
work.
Then select the profile you are using and Change Account Type to
Limited Account.

If the profile you are using is a Limited Account, access the
Administrator as stated above and create an Administrator profile to
be used for Administrator work.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm using XP Pro.

I pressed Ctrl/Alt/Del and typed in Administrator. It told me to check the
user name or password.

My profile called "Janice" has Computer Administrator" next to it.

Looking at User Profiles in System properties, only Janice is listed.
Documents and Settings has only a Janice folder.

What has happened to my default administrator? Surely my retailer has not
given the default administrator the name of "Janice". I also have two XP
Home systems set up by the same retailer that seems to have an administrator
and user profile.
