On my laptop which runs fine, I want to log on as "Administrator". I am the
second owner, and before I try to get a password from the original owner, is
there some default password I can try? It is only about 1.5 years old.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Try a blank password. Otherwise, and since it sounds like the OS came
pre-installed (and used) on the laptop, you'll need the prior owner to
divulge the password. A Google search will reveal some utilities to
cracking the password but I'd go after the prior owner first. If the OS
license is legal and was transferred with the sale of the laptop, the prior
owner cannot keep your property hostage. However, if the prior owner gave
you the installation CD for the OS, the prior owner may have been simply too
lazy to wipe the disk and do a default install (in which case it is likely
there is software that may now be pirated on this laptop) and instead
expected you to wipe the disk and do a fresh install. If you didn't get any
installation media with the laptop for the OS then you don't have a legal
copy of the OS. It happens. I've seen major corporations sell off old
computers even to their own employees under the premise that the OS was
included but no installation media was included and the OS was simply a
dirty disk that should've been wiped clean and the OS was then a pirated
copy because the company actually kept the license (and media).
